As with Philip Pullman’s other books there are fantasy elements integral to the story but they are included so subtly that you may not even notice. The layout of the hardbound novella is certainly a throwback to the past, with the story told in text, drawings and other resources. As his snake-dæmon comes around the barrels, Hester leaps on top of it, biting down and pulling it far away as Lee shoots McConville. And reduces my own pleasure in the reading, which should be great--I adore Pullman and this world of his.
