Whereas laminated glass holds in place when shattered, toughened glass breaks up into hundreds of tiny pieces. This process of taking the glass up to 750 degrees and then cooling it, changes the molecular structure of the glass and gives it a very high outer tensile strength. When broken, toughened glass breaks into small, relatively harmless pieces of glass which minimize the risk of injury. Toughened or tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. They are the largest independent manufacturer in the UK specializing in laminated, toughened and decorative glass, and conservatory glass units for trade, commercial and new builds.

It is also possible that the glass is laminated, which will also satisfy the requirement for safety glass, if so it is unlikely to be marked. The regulations are based on the level of risk that someone (especially, although not exclusively, small children) could fall through a particular pane of glass. To make the decision over when to specify toughened glass easier (and homes and commercial properties safer), Building Regulations have some pretty specific guidelines.

It then goes through a toughening furnace where the glass is heated up very quickly and then quenched and cooled very quickly. Toughened glass is required to be marked with BS6206a, this can take the form of the circular BS Kitemark or a simple line.
