A Portal of Power can also be used as a viewer, giving Portal Masters the ability to seek out locations and characters of interest -- allowing the Skylanders to know exactly where to go. Figures that were released for the Swap Force game will work in Swap Force and later games, but not necessarily in Spyro's Adventure or Giants, which both came before Swap Force. On 3DS, the older portal will work on all games except for Swap Force, which requires the newer Swap Force 3DS portal.

Portals may go by slightly different names, and some will specifically list a console that the portal was designed for. The "Traptanium Portal" from Skylanders Trap Team, or the "Wireless Portal of Power for Playstation 3" from Spyro's Adventure, are some examples of different names you might see.
