Maz Evans herself takes on narrator duties and does so very well indeed, with lots of energy and voices for each separate character. I loved that we were grounded by Elliot’s scary home situation. The scenes between Elliot and his mum were touching, loving and heartbreaking at the same time, and this aspect of the book was so well balanced with the humour and absurdity of the Gods. This final instalment follows directly on from events of the previous book, as Elliot has to make a decision that would allow him to retrieve his mother from her current location (no spoilers!!) at the potential expense of mankind. It's very dark indeed for a children's book, Elliot as carer has always been a convincing young man, going through trials that most readers will never have considered.

The storyline of Elliot's house and nasty teacher is also woven in, and is very satisfyingly drawn together. Every character you remember gets their moment. Read two books of this series. Some of the things are quite nice, like the hero's mother's wish & the whole position of the relationship of the hero with his mother. & the villain's mother's manipulation & wiliness. In diesem Buch geht es drunter und drüber. Denn der sterbliche Elliot gab dem Totengott Thanatos die Chaossteine, mächtige Steine, mit denen man tun und lassen kann, was man möchte. Und das tut Thanatos auch. Alle Zeichen stehen auf Krieg! Krieg der Götter und Dämonen. Virgo oder auch „die Hüterin des Büromaterialschranks“ ist ganz anders als die übrigen Sternzeichen und möchte in ihrem bereits tausend Jahre langen Leben endlich mal etwas erleben. Also macht sie sich auf den Weg zur Erde und zwar in die Nähe des berühmten Steinkreises Stonehenge, wo sie eigentlich bloß einem unsterblichen Gefangen sein Ambrosia ins Verließ werfen soll. Allerdings geht ihr Plan nicht ganz so auf, wie erhofft. Elliot, der sterbliche 12-jährige Junge, ist an dem Chaos, das kurz darauf ausbricht, ebenfalls nicht ganz unschuldig. Elliot hat alle Hände voll zu tun mit seiner Mutter, die nicht mehr so ganz bei Sinnen ist und der „Home Farm“, ihrem zu Hause, das kurz davor steht, zwangsversteigert zu werden. All das ist natürlich viel zu viel Verantwortung für einen 12-jährigen Jungen. Als er dann gemeinsam mit Virgo unplanmäßig in dem Verließ unter Stonehenge landet, kann er dem Angebot des gefangenen Unsterblichen nicht widerstehen. Freiheit gegen die Gesundheit von Elliots Mutter. Weder Elliot noch Virgo wissen jedoch, dass es sich bei dem Gefangenen, nicht wie es anfangs den Anschein machte, um einen gebrechlichen alten Mann handelt, den man zu Unrecht dort eingesperrt hatte, sondern um Thanatos, den Todesdämon, der seine ganz eigenen finsteren Pläne hegt. Als Thanatos frei ist, haben Elliot und Virgo offenkundig ziemlich große Probleme; Probleme, die sie niemals ohne Hilfe bewerkstelligen können. Und da auf die anderen Sternbilder kein Verlass ist, machen sich die beiden auf den Weg zu den Göttern. Denn die Götter können helfen, oder nicht? The amount of times I got funny looks on the train whilst reading this is ridiculous, but I didn’t care because THIS BOOK WAS HILARIOUS & I LAUGH/SNORTED AT EVERY JOKE.

Maz Evans writes popular characters from Greek mythology in a way that is recognisable but also modern and hilarious. Zeus isn't exactly the creep we love to hate, but rather a larger than life father figure who has too many ex wife's and an ongoing feud with Hera. Of course mythological fiction will be derivative, but THIS is stale & cliched, even for a children's book. The star is Virgo. She thinks she's perfect. Elliot doesn't. And together they release Thanatos, evil Daemon of Death ... epic fail.
Anyone who has read books 1-3 of the 'Who Let the Gods Out' series will of course, be reading this no matter what. The story of Elliot, unwittingly involved with the Greek Gods and their battles as he himself battles his mum's dementia has been a moving one. The first book in the hilarious bestselling WHO LET THE GODS OUT series, shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize! When Elliot wishes upon a star, he doesn't expect a constellation to crash into a dungheap on his family farm. I will give a special mention to the handling of Josie (Elliot's mum) and her mental health/memory issues. The storyline was well handled and honest, one of the only parts that was consistently good, but still could have been pushed a little further.

Auch wenn das Buch für jüngere Leser*innen ist, überzeugt mich der Schreibstil immer noch von seiner Gutheit. Er ist meiner Meinung nach sogar so gut wie der des Eberhofers und somit richtig gut. Es ist seit langem wieder mal ein Buch, an dem ich nichts auszusetzen habe. On top of the gods, goddesses and demons, we also have constellations. The zodiac Council and most importantly young Virgo who is a brilliant character, she's completely optimal.

Hold on to your pants because you are likely to lose everything else!’ Der Humor in diesem Buch kommt keinesfalls zu kurz, so gibt es auch jede Menge Bösewichte, die mal bedrohlich wirken, auf der anderen Seite aber auch einfach nur zum Schreien komisch sind. Zum Beispiel der nette Herr Trumpington, der Computerspiele designt, dadurch ziemlich reich geworden ist, in Wirklichkeit aber eigentlich der Schlafdämon Morphus ist. (Ich liebe die Anspielung auf Donald Trump). Ebenfalls ziemlich bedrohlich scheint Elliots Nachbarin, Fräulein Pferdehintern, zu sein. Laut eigener Aussage bekommt Fräulein Pferdehintern immer das, was sie will, und hat sich nun in den Kopf gesetzt, das Leben von Elliot und seiner Mutter zu zerstören, insbesondere nachdem sie herausgefunden hat, was bei ihnen wirklich vor sich geht. Und dann hätten wir natürlich noch unseren Hauptbösewicht, unseren Endgegner sozusagen: Thanatos, der Dämon. Tai turėtų perskaityti kiekvienas vaikas! Da hätten wir zum Beispiel unseren Playboy Zeus, der sich auch schon einmal ganz gerne als Klempner Bob ausgibt und jeder Frau schöne Augen macht, die ihm über den Weg läuft und sein edles Ross Pegasus, das normale Wassertränken verabscheut und lieber gekühlten Sprudel mit einem Scheibchen Zitrone trinkt. Hermes ist der Stylinggott schlechthin, er weiß was angesagt ist und was nicht und muss ständig was auf seinem iGod nachschauen, was sich am Ende auch tatsächlich als nützlich erweist. Außerdem hat er die Angewohnheit, sich nicht an die Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzungen zu halten. Besonders gerne mochte ich auch die beiden Schwetern Athene und Aphrodite, die sich bei jeder Gelegenheit in die Haare bekommen. I was captivated from the get-go–the story is charmingly infectious, Elliot is a great main character (I adored how sassy he was,) and the Gods were SO unique.
