More info on this can be found in the excellent reference work British Silver Coins from 1816, by Peter Davis. They also suffer from the dreaded fingermark problem, as they were not sold in special capsules like modern proof coins. In 1947 the Royal Mint removed all Silver from our coinage and it was now to be struck in cupro-nickel. I know that there's a reflection-readability self-test, but I believe the same dies on the VIP and proof strikes were used for the proof-like strikes. These coins were only minted in Proof condition, but sadly it is very difficult to find an unblemished copy; they pick up fingerprints extremely well!Benedetto Pistrucci was a distinguished Italian Gem-engraver, medallist and coin-engraver who became Chief-medallist at the Royal Mint in England.

When I lived in Canada back in 1962 I got 10 one dollar coins from the bank, and managed to spend most of them without difficulty, although they tended to be put on one side in the till so I doubt that they went further! Intended as a ‘tonic for the nation’, with its aim to lift the country’s spirits following the end of the Second World War, the Festival of Britain was a spectacular cultural event that showcased British manufacturing and design. It was made of 22 carat gold ("crown gold") and has a value of five shillings (a quarter of a pound).

They also issued a special Crown for King George VI, only the second crown struck for this monarch in this country. Members from this site want to exchange it: Eureka, floyd1, pyros09100, Joe-breuille, Pipo7, Spatri, Crapgamer, Arnhemcoin, Andrej-Oslo, rmj, YnCaptan, Haigbill, WyldStallyns, superman43, Or3s7as, J-J. I have also got both the 'normal' 1960 Crown, plus an impaired example of the 'Polished Dies' 1960 Crown, which is one extremely difficult coin to find.If your product is not a graded coin and is considered a bullion item, it should be noted that these are bought and sold on low premiums over their precious metal content and not solely for aesthetic purposes; therefore, some products may have edge knocks and/or marks. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The first was struck for his Coronation in 1937 and that was half silver, this second and last crown was struck in Prooflike cupronickel. Coins derive their value from their rarity, condition, visual appeal and - most importantly – the size of their collector base.
