About this deal

ED Lens from Nikon is a fast aperture standard zoom lens designed for photojournalism and general photography with wide-angle to portrait length perspectives.

Two ED glass elements and three aspherical lens elements virtually eliminate coma and other types of aberration—even when shooting wide-open. AF fixed lens has an aperture ring (it's not a G lens), so it works perfectly on every digital and film camera made since 1977, and with some modification, back to 1959. The correct way to use an ultrawide is to jam it into whatever you are photographing, which effectively rubs the viewer's nose in your subject.

The Z7 II, Z6 II, Z7, Z6, and Z5 correct for any or all of distortion, diffraction and falloff (vignette control), any of which may be turned ON or OFF. While central and peak sharpness at your point of focus are both very good wide open, across the frame consistency is lacking.

Interestingly it’s also the only lens or camera review on DPreview’s site with a 90% score and without a gold star rating. The only trouble was having to wait between all the camera flashes from other people before I could take my shots! My 14mm fixed lens is much smaller and lighter, but not as sharp at larger apertures and has more peripheral color shift.Although the physical length of the lens does not change (due to the fixed plastic hood), the front element moves in and out when the focal length is changed. Product name includes “DG” when the lens is designed to deliver the ultimate in performance on cameras with full-frame sensors, and “DN” when the lens design is optimized for mirrorless cameras with the short flange focal length. Furthermore, bokeh can at times appear busy due to double-edged bokeh in transition zones and bright edges on specular highlights (think out-of-focus holiday lights) that gives specular highlights a 'soap bubble' effect.
