About this deal

Cynthia starts a new school and the main story unfolds as she falls into a complicated romantic situation. As the story progresses, Cynthia grows closer to two brothers—one white and privileged, the other black and adopted—who help her adjust to her new environment.

Having grown up in north London, my knowledge of people falling into ‘road’ life is not quite the same as Cyn’s and Isaac’s knowledge - and experience - of it.She somehow manages to circle it round to make you realise that it was due to her own lack of self-love. As much as Cynthia likes Thomas though, she can't help noticing Isaac, the only other black student in her year. Our strict Jamaican headmistress got wind of the book’s contents and banned it, making it even more imperative to read!

She is also the founder of Make Motherhood Diverse - an online initiative that aims to ensure many more mothers see themselves reflected online - and a hugely popular influencer.I heard Braithwaite being interviewed about some of these issues when the book came out, and the discussion was very powerful. An exploration of race, class, love and the complexities of growing up as a Black British teen, from bestselling author Candice Brathwaite. Written in Candice's trademark straight-talking, warm and funny style, it will delight her fans, old and new. I thought this book had the potential to be a good book, but instead, it was underwhelming and poorly written. Candice's commentary on class, race, prejudice, racism, growing up black in britain and the stigma of knife crime and gangs are done so well and have you checking your privilege at the door.

It’s a matter of pushing your pride aside and in all honesty, it’s something that only really comes out with family. Ok I'm obsessed with Candice Brathwaite anyway, she's my favourite person at the moment and this book was sooooooo shock twisty twisters I could almost hear her voice in my head as I read the words revealing who Isaac was. As a black woman yet to have children Candice has brought me a different perspective to things such as black children and private schooling and as the book rightly states our community needs to be able to access a diversity of the black parenting experience. The books featured on this site are aimed primarily at readers aged 13 or above and therefore you must be 13 years or over to sign up to our newsletter. At her new school, Cynthia immediately finds herself caught between two brothers – head boy Thomas, who is white, and his adopted Black brother, Isaac.Well, as the pastor explained, "Even if God doesn’t make good on his promise in this lifetime, he will make good on it in heaven. The title to be read and discussed is sign-posted and on sale for the whole of the previous month (with a discount for those who make it known they intend to come) and everybody is welcome, whether first-timer, part-timer or regular-timer. I feel a bit like some things weren’t disclosed that I wanted to know or that were built up to be a thing like Thomas just excepting that Cyn (see I love her I respect her, I love reading worlds man! Brathwaite also does not hold back in the searing depiction of classism and racism that defines much of the narrative.

This means that even quite distressing content can be read and absorbed and it continues to be a compulsive read (it’s also a fairly short book, coming in at just under 230 pages).

If you’ve ever heard Candice Brathwaite speak, either on IG Lives, podcasts or in person, you know that 2 minutes does not pass without her dropping gems 💎 there are gems all over in this book as well. It provides so much information and breathtakingly honest insight into the unique challenges of black motherhood, and the barriers and issues that are still hugely prevalent (especially in healthcare and in schools!
