About this deal

Acorus gramineus 'Hakuro-nishiki' (v)(Japanese rush) semi-evergreen fans of glossy,bright-yellow andgreen leaves. Height 35cm (14ins)

A common kind of grass is used to cover the ground in places such as lawns and parks. Grass is usually the color green. That is because they are wind-pollinated rather than insect-pollinated, so they do not have to attract insects. Green is the best colour for photosynthesis. It’s been designed to both rake and collect foliage, grass clippings and scarifying material, meaning it can be used any time of year. The rotating brushes lightly brush the ground, and the debris is collected in the spacious 90 L basket, which is easy to remove and empty once full. A calculated feature of the first edition was that the book included neither the author nor the publisher's name (both the author and publisher being Whitman). Instead, the cover included an engraving by Samuel Hollyer depicting Whitman himself—in work clothes and a jaunty hat, arms at his side. [11] This figure was meant to represent the devil-may-care American working man of the time, one who might be taken as an almost idealized figure in any crowd. The engraver, later commenting on his depiction, described the character with "a rakish kind of slant, like the mast of a schooner".Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus' flowerheads of darkest purple-red fade to silver. Height to 2m (6½ft)

You can record the first flowering dates of the four common grasses described above for the Nature’s Calendar project. In a constantly changing culture, Whitman's literature has an element of timelessness that appeals to the American notion of democracy and equality, producing the same experience and feelings within people living centuries apart. [33] Originally written at a time of significant urbanization in America, Leaves of Grass also responds to the impact such has on the masses. [34] The title metaphor of grass, however, indicates a pastoral vision of rural idealism. Grass leaf blades are commonly thought of as being ribbon shaped and with parallel veins. While the great majority of grass leaf blades are of this shape, some of the tropical forest grasses have broadly oval blades. The leaves of desert grasses, however, are stiff, harsh, and frequently rolled inward. In some species they become bristly and are probably unattractive to grazing animals. Aquatic grasses are also known, and some of these are able to float on the surface of the water because of inflated leaf sheaths or waxy, nonwettable leaves. Carex muskingumensis (e) (palm branch sedge) spreading with uprightbright green leaves.Height 75cm (28ins) Leaves of Grass plays a prominent role in the American television series Breaking Bad. Episode eight of season five (" Gliding Over All", after poem 271 of Leaves of Grass) pulls together many of the series' references to Leaves of Grass, such as the fact that protagonist Walter White has the same initials (and almost the same name) as Walt Whitman (as noted in episode four of season four, " Bullet Points", and made more salient in "Gliding Over All"), that leads DEA agent Hank Schrader to gradually realize Walter is the notorious drug dealer Heisenberg. Numerous reviewers have analyzed and discussed the various connections among Walt Whitman/ Leaves of Grass/"Gliding Over All", Walter White, and the show. Probably because of this trait, the plants are virtually unable to maintain themselves in nature. The wild oat ( A. fatua), which is a probable parent of many cultivated types, has seed that is dormant when mature. Thus the grain is able to survive the winter without injury and then germinate in the spring. As a consequence, A. fatua is a widespread weed. Similar examples of dormancy are widespread among grasses. Callow, Philip (1992). From Noon to Starry Night: A Life of Walt Whitman. Chicago: Ivan R. Dee. ISBN 0-929587-95-2.
