About this deal

I thought about the photos I take; the mementoes I bring back from distant parts of the world and odd corners of the nearby; the life I lead wandering around with my cameras, sucking images from the flux around me, both as my work and as my compulsion; collecting these traces of time with my little black box. Drawing us into a vanished world, Echoes weaves an intricate tapestry of a mother’s love, a daughter’s courage…and the unwavering faith that sustained them–even in history’s darkest hour.

This is the Young Adult thriller that might just convert some of those adult readers out there who think YA isn’t interesting enough or able to grab their attention. Though that is me hoping upon hoping upon wishing every wish that there will be a sequel because omigosh I NEED MORE!High school students Fiona and Miles are recipients of a swanky internship for tech-giant, Briola, in Germany. Her development, particularly in the aspect of her fear of authority, is shaky, but I give it points for the attempt. I loved Fiona, and I like how she really gets to know Miles despite the fact that they haven't been friends this whole time. It started as a much more domestic show set in Tasmania with references to Top of the Lake and True Detective. Maybe that was partially a personal thing as I really wanted to know what was going to happen next and I really wanted more answers, so maybe my brain just wanted to skip everything else, but the pacing felt off to me.

Nobody was going to be forgiven for anything, like blighting David's young life, forcing him to marry a girl from the lower classes, a shotgun wedding and an early baby. Her kickboxing champion angle is interesting, but the fight scenes are fast and poorly described, so I never got as good a sense of it as I wanted. I have this nostalgia but I never grew up like Clare so, as Beverly said, that is what makes a great author. In this novel he has created a world of immense sensory and emotional precision, at once true in its living details and yet electric with the presence of ghosts. Thus begins a harrowing journey of survival, as she escapes into the heart of the French Resistance. Even after the last page, I am still in a whirlwind of mysterious and questions…the biggest one being IS THERE A SEQUEL?

At a certain point, we leave behind the flashbacks and it seemed to do so at a pretty critical moment. They were stranded and fighting for their lives, unreliable hormones should have been the furthest thing from their minds. Plus it ended like a first book, but I don't see anything saying there is going to be more than one book. And as the two built a new life together, Beata’s past would stay with her in ways she could never have predicted.

It seemed really interesting and like the author was going to unveil everything, but then it took a turn went vague and kind of confusing. The relationship development between the two characters is woven through the story so that it’s an extension of the plot rather than the main focus.
