About this deal

The Truly Devious series continues as Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery. Susan, the head of the camp, jogs over to where Brandy is screaming and realises that Eric is dead. She aks Shawn to call the police. Oh. Okay. I’ll have a... I guess... make it a half pound of that, and a pound of... do you have low-fat Swiss cheese? So finally, here we are. The center of the home, and the fourth book in the series. Where both highs and lows go to die. Nothing particularly good, nothing particularly bad - other than the pain caused by your memories of when things were better. Not good - never good - but better. As she climbed into bed, Stevie thumbed through her messages. Right after the Ellingham case broke, she had gotten many of them—media requests, strange influencer offers ( We think you’d be a great fit to promote our paleo meal kits), creepers, and people who wanted her to help find their lost relatives or dogs. The media requests had been okay, but they had petered out. The bizarre influencer offers had stopped. Stevie had sympathy for people who had missing relatives or dogs, but usually there was nothing that could be done from a distance. So really, it was just the creepers now. They were loyal.

The Box in the Woods - Maureen Johnson

The author really shows off her craft and finesse with The Box In The Woods by making this a solid read for those who haven’t read the first books in the series. As someone who hasn’t read the first three, it was easy enough to follow along with the characters and their established relations. More importantly, there were no spoilers (that I could tell) from the original mysteries, and she didn’t spend a lot of time explaining the past, which can be tiring for familiar readers. Johnson managed to find a really nice balance between the two extremes. Stevie tells everyone that six people were murdered in 1978, not four, and everyone in the town is lying. I mean, I could have told them that. Stevie says Paul was lying about being with Shawn, and that Paul was actually gay and went to secret meet a guy. Susan covered this up because she is also gay. Sabrina wonders whether Patty’s dad is a Nazi. She wonders what happened to his random guest and whether he was killed. She tries ringing him but it doesn’t go through. Sabrina starts researching the Third Reich. obviously, it's nice to have a whole three books to wrap up a murder mystery storyline because it gives more space for things to go wrong, more room for development, for learning to love the characters and the writing style and the world, but the author still pulls off the one book story arc just as well as the original trilogy, and let me just say, i would be happy with at least three more of these books but i understand if she decides to leave it here lolUnderage drug use, marijuana use, drinking, murder, death of a loved one, grief, cheating, anxiety, shooting, hit and run, identity theft, stabbing, graphic depictions of gore and blood. A big bold YES! This is the opportunity she’s been looking for. Janelle and Nat already says yes and David hmmm yes he’s always extra annoying who promises to join them later and wants her to keep him updated about events.

The Box in the Woods by Maureen Johnson

After the giant picnic, the group of teen friends hang out on the football field. Patty and Greg argue and drives off on his bike and dies. Come on in. Make yourself at home. But also get homey while you're walking, because it's tour time. So...yeah. This is my humble abode and the location of my unrelenting mundane quasi-punishment.

Stevie is working at a grocery store over the summer. She’s unfortunately still dating David, although no one knows why. He’s off somewhere trying to take down his politician father. So this was a disappointment. I expected so much from this. I loved the previous three Truly Devious books and there was no reason I wouldn’t read this. Sadly it wasn’t that good.

Okay, if we keep moving a bit, here we are at the original ending of the house. Not what you wanted, right? Pretty unsatisfying, as far as endings go. You kind of realize that the journey here was more fun than the conclusion. So it's no wonder that...aha! Another door. We built a surprise addition! We couldn't end there. After solving the case of Truly Devious, Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson. FOR FANS OF: YA murder mysteries, the Truly Devious series, summer camp horror movies Content + Trigger Warnings Stevie flipped to the photo of the grandmotherly woman with the old-fashioned glasses and bun who was peering lovingly into a skull.Stevie and her friends reconvene to share intel. A guy called Jason becomes a suspect but probably only for killing Todd. This morning we have pancakes in the dining pavilion, and it’s softball day, so everyone let’s get up and at ’em! It turns out that Patty told her father about Greg and Sabrina kissing in the pool house. Horne/von Hessen decided Sabrina and co. had to die, so he killed them. He later killed Greg because he was in the pool house with Sabrina. The Box in the Woods was nostalgic and fun. I enjoyed the shake-up, as far as the setting goes, in this one. I love Ellingham Academy, don't get me wrong, but this made for a nice change of pace. I also was impressed with how Johnson wrote this one so that it could actually be read as a standalone. I have read every book in this series and would definitely recommend that, but I can see how someone could actually read this on its own.
