About this deal

Thousands were converted to the Catholic faith because these Saints lived like the Christ they taught about. Often abused to the point of death the were thrown back into the prison and then given the same treatment again often ending their life by execution. It only took me about six years to make my journey to Catholicism and this book was one of the first paths that I embarked upon.

I enjoyed reading and learning about the daily saints, Doctors, and martyrs of the Church in concise, well-written, prose. J., and Donald Attwater to retain the charms of Butler’s original prose style, this work of devotion and scholarship offers truths central to Christianity and underlying themes of Christian love. Joan Carroll Cruz This book tells of consecrated Hosts which have visibly turned to human flesh, have bled, levitated, and which have become hard as flint when received by a person in mortal sin. The drawbacks are that unless you have a very good grasp of history it can be hard to understand what was going in in the saint's life. He labored for some time as a missionary priest in Staffordshire, and was finally appointed president of the English seminary at Saint Omer in France, where he remained till his death in 1773.

I highly recommend using Lives of the Saints as part of a daily regimen to deepen one's faith by way of being introduced to inspiring examples of faith. There are many useful, and even extended, notes in the first edition, but not to the extent that they appear in the second, and succeeding editions.

It details the official investigations that have been made into these miracles by professional scientists, and it tells of where these miraculous phenomena can still be venerated today. Written in the early 19th Century by Alban Butler, and English convert to Catholicism, this twelve volume collection was a collection of the stories of the lives of all the Saints that existed at that time. I was taken by one story; the story of Alban; a man who came to know Christ by the praises of a fugitive; a story that made the words of 2 Samuel 22:50 come to life proving yet again the power of Gods word!It was at Douay, he began his principal work The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs and Other Principal Saints. Christian good goes to pagan bad country to make savage people understand they were wrong all along the course of their history and they need to become civilized christian good to not go to hell like their ancestors, and they need to let the church rule their country too. There is also in-depth historical and contextual background on major saints, and the inclusion of many new saints and the blessed from recent decades. The author, Father Alban Butler, was born in England in 1710 and the copy I have is not written in American English.

I do wish that some of the descriptions made the saints seem more individual, or talked of how they were made saints. He gives us saints who are examples of Christian living, who provide inspiration for our own lives, in every time and circumstance. I found most of the saints, especially the martyrs, depressing, not inspiring and somewhat akin to the religious radicals of today. Having read through the book once, I now look forward to being reacquainted with each new day's Saint. Blesseds appearing in previous volumes who have since been canonized have had their information updated and expanded. The lived humbly and gave all that had to the poor and often were themselves suffering ailments and disabilities. A very eye appealing set of four hardcovers books with a very thorough collection of the saints biographies. It is always inspiring to read the lives of saints, to hear of ordinary men with extraordinary love for God that draws them into amazing acts of heroism.
