About this deal

This utterly charming collection offers a warm and friendly look at the place that cats occupy in our hearts and lives. The letters are wide ranging, letters of great historical importance, letters of consolation, some light hearted notes, letters from famous personages and letters from not so famous personages but that are equally as interesting. He is the sole custodian of the popular blog, Letters of Note, a much-anticipated book of which is to be published in October 2013 following lengthy periods of hair-pulling and despair. com – so I was thrilled when he pitched the idea for a Letters of Note book to the crowd-sourced publisher, unbound.

From Virginia Woolf's heartbreaking suicide letter, to Queen Elizabeth II's recipe for drop scones sent to President Eisenhower; from the first recorded use of the expression 'OMG' in a letter to Winston Churchill, to Gandhi's appeal for calm to Hitler; and from Iggy Pop's beautiful letter of advice to a troubled young fan, to Leonardo da Vinci's remarkable job application letter, Letters of Note is a celebration of the power of written correspondence which captures the humour, seriousness, sadness and brilliance that make up all of our lives. The way the letters are laid out is brilliant and allows the book to flow from one letter to another quickly and simply, and it doesn't ever feel overly stodgy with info.A small detail worth noting (no pun intended) is the beautiful presentation of including an attached ribbon page-holder to “Letter of Note” which adds sentiment and an element of elegance. The collection seemed to me to be something one would like to leaf through at will to read at leisure. There is a letter reportedly from Jack the Ripper which sent a genuine shiver down my spine, a heart-warming letter to a fan from Iggy Pop, a recipe for drop scones (which I really must try) from Queen Elizabeth II to President Eisenhower and so many more. Yes, the letters are unique and meaningful, but at times, it becomes tedious to see the same famous names repeated. Born in Cambridge in 1952, Douglas Adams was best known for creating The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a wildly successful project that began in 1978 as a science-fiction comedy radio series and eventually evolved to become something much larger, in many formats and in many languages, adored by many millions of people around the world.

Four or five letters brought tears to my eyes, for various reasons and some of them were simply masterpieces. Then there is the desperate message carved into a coconut shell by John F Kennedy, stranded on the Solomon Islands in 1943, which resulted in his rescue. It is full of really interesting letters and is also nicely edited with copies of the letters and images. I loved the insight it brings to people like Iggy Pop and the way it opens your eyes to history and people you've never even thought about before. Shaun Usher brings together a riveting collection of letters by and about some of the musicians and music that enrich our lives. I didn't like the show-offy letters, like Eudora Welty's (though I love Eudora Welty) and Groucho Marx.

Galileo’s 1610 letter to Doge of Venice describing Jupiter’s four largest moons is written on parchment.Man’s curiosity, his relentlessness, his inventiveness, his ingenuity have led him into deep trouble. This wonderful volume features letters for the great and the good, including Mick Jagger, Roald Dahl - and the Queen, with her personal recipe for drop scones!
